This paper was published in 2008. A 9 year old girl started chiropractic care with the goal of wellness. During her history it was revealed that the girl had type 1 diabetes, diagnosed in 2001 and hypothroidism in 2006. With the diabetes, the girl would experience hypoglycemic episodes as frequently as once a week.
The exam revealed evidence of structural abnormalities and restrictions in spinal motion.
The girl was adjusted 3 times a week for 2 weeks before reducing adjustment frequency. Recommendations regarding diet were made including increase intake of water, fruit and vegetables.
After 52 visits during an update of the girls medical history, the mother reported stabilization of levels of glucose as well as a reduction in the amount of insulin needed to control glycemia. There was a decrease in frequency of hypoglycemic episodes to once a month and improved sleep.
Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that can be manged by medicine but has no cure. This case study demonstrates the results of one patient while under chiropractic care. In 2011 there was a similar case with a 4 year child and improvement of their A1C. More researched is needed to determine if there is a connection between chiropractic care and improvement of type 1 diabetes management.
Each week I’m going to share a new research journal article regarding chiropractic. Many of these are case studies with benefits most people would not typically associate with chiropractic. If you want to read the full text, feel free to swing by the office.
